This chapter focuses on Boot ROM functionality and operation; BootROM is a small piece of

code that starts its execution just after the SoC exits from reset.

5.1

Boot modes

●

Boot from NOR serial Flash

●

Boot from NAND Flash

●

Boot from NOR parallel Flash

●

Boot / Upgrade from USB

●

Boot from UART0

●

Boot from Ethernet (MII0)

●

Boot ROM Bypass

The first three modes are the normal ways of booting the software and require a second-

level boot software (X-Loader) in NOR/NAND Flash.

USB Boot is meant to boot without Flash memories. It is used to upgrade 1st to 3rd level

boot in Flash memories.

5.2

Boot stages

Figure 5 describes boot stages on SPEAr320S in more details. There are 4 stages of

booting:

Boot stage 3 (Bootloader e.g. U-Boot)
